We picked the peas this morning, and I was having so much fun picking that I forgot to take any pictures! We ended up with about half a gallon bag of the shelling peas (unshelled) and half a gallon bag of the snow peas. Peas are fun to grow, and nothing tastes as good as a fresh, sweet, raw pea.
Unfortunately, the yield for 4 x 12 foot area was about enough for only 1-2 meals for a family of 4 for each type of pea. I rarely advocate planting peas in a raised bed for that very reason. The yield is just not high enough to justify using that space.
The reason we planted peas in the Demo Garden this year is because I had the pea seeds left over from the Wichita Garden Show, and I thought I could get the peas out in time to plant the eggplant. Well…the eggplant are still waiting. But with that in mind, I decided to have the Master Gardeners pull out the snow peas after harvesting today, and then we’d pull the shelling peas after harvesting next week and plant the eggplant. However, after pulling out the snow peas, this is what we saw:
That would be some nice fat green caterpillars, lots and lots of fat and happy aphids, and a few ladybugs gorging themselves on the aphids. Wow! At this point, I decided to sacrifice the remaining pea harvest in the interest of providing the eggplant a safe place to grow. We pulled all the peas, and hopefully letting the area sit until next week will starve some of the insects. (I sprayed a neem oil on the beans, just in case the aphids saw a likely new home…)
The eggplant will be thankful to get in the ground next week! I started the seeds intending for them to be in the ground about 3 weeks ago, so they are looking a little rough right now. (I personally couldn’t care less if our yield is lower, because I think eggplant are disgusting!)
