Ready, Set, Grow!
The first of the spring seeds are in the ground and ready to grow as of this afternoon!
Seeds are going into the ground in our Family of 4 Garden!
In the Family of 4 Garden, we planted a 4′ x 4′ area to radishes, lettuces, spinach, and mesclun mix. The remaining 4′ x 4′ area devoted to spring salad vegetables will be planted in about 2 weeks. This will allow a more consistent harvest of salad vegetables throughout the spring. In mid-May, any remaining lettuces and greens will be harvested to make room for the winter squash.
In the Year-Round Salad Garden, we planted a 4′ x 6′ area (about 1/4 of the area) to more radishes, lettuces, spinach, and mesclun. We will plant again in 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 5 or 6 weeks. As the weather warms up, we space the plantings closer because the plants mature more quickly.
Another raised bed was planted to two types of peas: ‘Feisty,’ a type of shelling pea, and ‘Dwarf Grey Sugar,’ a sugar snap pea. In May, the peas will be replaced with eggplant.
