You have got to be kidding me! That is precisely the thought going through my mind as I look at the weather forecast for tonight. Seriously?!? 20 degrees?!? UGH!

For those of you with fruit trees, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but at that temperature there is nothing short of covering the entire tree and putting a heater under the cover that could potentially rescue your fruit for the year, IF the tree has already set fruit or is in bloom. Killing temperatures depend on the stage of bud development and the temperature. Check out this webpage from Michigan State that has an illustrated guideline of the critical temperatures.

Our little vegetable seedlings are still doing fine, although I think the weather is going to be a little chilly tonight, even for them. I will have to get the row covers back out this afternoon and tuck them in for the night. We really need to get the next round of lettuce, spinach, and radishes in the ground, but I think that will have to wait until later this week or early next week.

I am ready for spring to be here and stay!

UPDATE: Here’s what the Family of 4 Garden looks like with its protective row cover in place.

The plastic hoops are in place. They help keep the row cover from resting on the plants, which can cause damage.

The row cover is on and held down with several bricks. It should stay warm enough under the cover to prevent freeze damage.
