After the weather cleared up yesterday afternoon, I went out to plant the onions in the Family of 4 Garden. I decided to plant onion transplants, since I’d never done that before. (My family has always planted onion sets.) I bought a bunch of Red Candy Onions and a bunch of Texas 1015Y onions.
If you remember from the Family of 4 Garden Map (pdf), the onions were to be planted in a 2 x 4 foot section next to the Brussels sprouts.
Onions should be spaced 3-4 inches apart, so I divided the two feet into six rows, 4 inches apart. Then I planted the transplants 3-4 inches apart within the rows. This method allows the maximum use of space for onions. At 12 plants per row, 6 rows, I planted 72 onions. Not bad!
Step 1: Dig a trench about 2 inches deep.
Step 2: Set the plants in the trench, spaced about 3-4 inches apart.
Step 3: Firm the soil around the plants, standing them upright in the process.
Here’s what it looked like after the onions were planted. 6 mostly-straight rows!
